Major Electrical Hazards to Avoid

September 24, 2019

Electricity has changed our world and it has an effect on almost every aspect of our life. Despite how central it is to our lives, it’s still dangerous technology that, if not used properly, can lead to severe injury or even death.

Thus, it’s important that you always take precautions when dealing with electricity and that you always use it correctly. Given the very real risks electricity presents, we encourage you to never take on a DIY project that involves electrical systems.

Further, it’s important to always use extreme caution when dealing with electricity in your home. With this in mind, today we’ll talk about some electrical hazards and some ways you can help to protect your home and your family from these hazards.

Electrical Circuit and Electrical Shocks

electriccircuitAn electrical shock occurs when your body comes in contact with electrical energy. Electrical energy can flow through the human body, which means that a current can travel to various parts of your body creating major health concerns.

These types of shocks are generally the result of touching wires, circuits or appliances that are not safe or that are in need of repair. Depending on the extent of the shock, it can cause no injury or very serious injuries.

As a result, electrical shocks are one of the most concerning electrical hazards. They can be extremely dangerous and are something you should attempt to avoid whenever possible. If you have any concerns about wiring, appliances or circuits in your home, always play it safe by turning off the electricity to these areas and calling a professional.

The Risk of Electrical Burns

electricalburnOne of the most common types of electrical injury is an electrical burn. This occurs when your skin comes in contact with an electrical current.

This often looks similar to a normal burn; however, it can also cause internal damage that you might not be able to see or detect.

Given that risk, it’s important to seek medical attention if you receive an electrical burn. Also, immediately turn off power to whatever caused the shock.

The Simple Precaution of Unplugging Appliances

unplugOne easy way to make your home a little safer and to decrease the risk of an electrical fire is to unplug appliances when you’re not using them.

If an appliance is plugged in, an electrical current is still running through it. This can cause it to heat up and increases the risk of an electrical fire.

Unplugging appliances means that there is no current running through it and that you have no risk of extra heat or any sort of electrical concern. It’s an easy way to make your home just a little bit safer. Despite how comfortable we feel using electricity, it nevertheless can be incredibly dangerous.

As such, it’s important to always use caution when dealing with electricity and to never take on home projects dealing with electricity without the necessary skill and experience. If you have any electrical questions or concerns, call Beltz Home Service Co. today at (419) 421-0072. What You Need to Know About Your Home & Humidity

August 19, 2019

Have you ever wondered why, if everyone is always complaining about humidity, so many people are talking about using humidifiers in their home? Or, how it is that the same people that talk about the benefits of a humidifier also talk about using a dehumidifier? Does anyone really understand what it is that we’re trying to accomplish here?

Many people are confused about humidity and their home. Today we’re going to talk about how humidity affects your home and your family in hopes of helping you understand more about when you might need a humidifier or a dehumidifier.

Humidity and Health Issues

healthissuesOne of the things that can make humidity complicated is the fact that if the humidity in your gets either too high or too low it can lead to problems. Air that is too dry can lead to respiratory problems, can exacerbate asthma or allergies and can irritate your skin and hair.

In contrast, air that is too humid becomes the perfect breeding ground for viruses, bacteria, mold, and allergens. To avoid any of these health issues, you’ll want to keep the humidity levels in your home between 30 and 60%.

As the weather changes, the levels of humidity also change, leading to drier air in the cold seasons and more humid air during hot seasons. Keeping your home’s humidity levels consistent no matter what the weather is like can help to keep your family healthy throughout the year.

What You Need to Know About Humidifiers

humidifiersIf your air is dry, especially during the winter months, it might be a good idea to use a humidifier.

You can tell that your home could benefit from a humidifier if you or your family members have dry skin, dry lips, a nagging dry cough or frequent bloody noses. If you’re concerned, it’s also a good idea to test the humidity levels in your home to make sure they’re in a safe area.

If you think that your home needs a humidifier, there are different options available. You can select a portable humidifier to place in certain rooms or a central humidifier to use throughout your home.

When is a Dehumidifier Necessary?

dehumidifiersYou can tell that your home needs a dehumidifier if the air feels damp or smells musty; if the walls are wet to the touch or have mold patches; or if you’ve had any flooding. If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to use a dehumidifier in your home.

If you have family members with allergies or respiratory issues, it’s especially important to pay attention to these indicators and to address them as soon as possible to avoid exacerbating health issues.

While it seems counterintuitive to talk about using both humidifiers and dehumidifiers, it actually makes pretty good sense when you consider the importance of keeping the humidity levels in your home constant despite seasonal changes in the air’s humidity levels. If you have any additional questions about your home, humidity, and overall air quality call Beltz Home Service Co. today!

Focus On Savings this Summer With Low Flush Toilets

July 2, 2019

Have you thought about the steps you can take to save the environment? There is solar energy, geothermal heating, and low-energy lighting – but one part of your home may be much more wasteful than you think.

If you have an older toilet, you could be wasting as much as 7 gallons of water with every flush. Fortunately, it’s easy to save water in your bathroom (even if it needs a full bathroom-remodel). This post is meant to tell you all about low flushing toilets, and how they can make your home less wasteful.

Understanding Low Flush Toilets

lowflushingtoiletsLow flush toilets, also known as low flow toilets, are designed to use less water with every flush. There are several different models available right now, including ultra-low-flush toilets, but on average, a low flush toilet uses 30% less water per flush than an older, less efficient kind.

Some people have avoided low flow toilets in the past because they are worried they will not work as effectively. That is actually far from the truth – these days, low flow toilets are just as effective, if not even more effective, than older toilets. They’re also increasingly affordable and install just as easily as any toilet.

How Do They Work?

plumbinginspectionTo really understand how low flush toilets save so much water, you need to have a good idea of how a traditional toilet works.

Older toilets are gravity-driven, which means they rely only on the force of gravity to flush water into the bowl and force waste out.

With only gravity, it takes a lot of water to make the flush powerful. Low flow toilets, on the other hand, operate using both gravity and pressure.

When you flush a low flow toilet, pressure forces water to stay in the bowl and drives out the waste, without needing tons of water to create a powerful flush. As low flow toilets become more and more modernized, they flush just as powerfully as older models.

The Importance Of Reducing Water Usage

showerfaucetsThere is nothing more important than protecting our environment. Saving the planet starts with ordinary people, taking steps to lower their water and energy use in their own home.

A lot of parts of the country will experience serious drought this summer – by switching your toilet to a low flow model, you can do your part and make a real difference.

Low flushing toilets aren’t the only way you can reduce water use in your home, but they are an awesome, easy place to start. If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of your home, you should consider investing in a low flush toilet.

They are affordable, effective and so durable that a new model will surely save you money in the long run. Your low flow toilet can significantly cut down the water waste in your home, without any hassle.

B. As hot water is depleted, the priority element (upper) comes on, shutting down the lower element.

C. The upper element is satisfied, so the lower element can turn back on and finish heating the rest of the thank.

D. Both elements are satisfied, the lower element turns off.

Flushable? Maybe not…

April 14, 2019

Top 3 ways toilet paper can clog your pipes…

While companies like Charmin and Cottonelle are known for promising the softest, plushest toilette paper available, what’s not commonly known is they are a growing cause for emergency plumbing services in Findlay. Sure, that quilted feeling is great on your bum, but it isn’t so great for your plumbing. Luxurious toilet paper products can clog pipes; and the thicker the paper, the more problems it can cause. Findlay homes are susceptible to a variety of plumbing issues, but when it comes to problems caused by toilet paper, there are three main culprits: flushable wipes, low flow toilets and cast iron pipes.

Flushable wipes: The New Culprit

Companies continue to develop new products to try and attract a variety of customers. One of the latest products is flushable wipes. They promote better hygiene and improved comfort; however, this comfort comes with a price. Your sewer system is built for human waste, and even though these wipes claim to be flushable, the truth is that they do not dissolve or move as fluidly as needed.

Low flow toilets

Flushed wipes down the toiletWhile low flow toilets are better for the environment because they use significantly less water, using the wrong toilet paper with them can be bad news for your pipes. Using less water to flush causes a reduction in the water pressure that pushes waste down the pipes and this causes buildup over time. San Diego homeowners are usually more than happy to swap their expensive, luxurious paper products to go green, especially when they discover the additional savings on their water bills!

Cast iron pipes

Cast iron plumbing has jagged edges or spurs that develop on the inside of pipes. Those spurs and edges catch non-dissolving material like the remnants from those fancy toilet papers, causing frequent and annoying back-ups.

A tip to avoid emergency plumbing service: Test your toilet paper

Plumbing emergencies are mores costly than regular maintenance and prevention, so save yourself the headache with one easy trick: test your toilet paper. Take a square or two of your current toilet paper and drop it into the toilet. If a few minutes have passed and it still looks similar or nearly identical then it may be too thick, putting your plumbing at risk. Instead of using the thick toilet paper products available today opt for a thinner, lighter option. Usually, the more cost-effective toilet paper products are friendlier to your plumbing. If you find yourself with a nasty clog regardless of your precautionary efforts, contact us. Our team of plumbing experts has the experience and equipment you need to resolve even the most stubborn of plumbing issues. Were available at standard rates from 7a to 7pm, 7 days a week! 24 hour emergency service is also available.

Are Tankless Water Heaters Green?

March 5, 2019

Green Technology…Tankless Water Heaters You Say?

Consider this…a standard water heater keeps 40 to 80 gallons of water heated to 120 degrees…sometimes higher. It doesn’t matter if you’re asleep, at the park playing with your kids or walking the dog. In fact you many not even be at home. That means every minute of every day your water heater is at work burning energy.

Did you know that the cost of heating that water can be your homes 2nd or 3rd biggest energy expense? That means it could be 13%-15% of a home’s water bill.

A tankless water heater (sometimes know as a “demand” water heater can help minimize the cost. It also reduces the environmental impact.

How does it work?

A tankless water heater uses a powerful heat exchanger to raise the temperature of the water. (a heat exchanger is a device the transfers heat from one source to another) In this case it transfers heat generated by electric coils or gas fired burners to the water that comes out of your tap or the shower. When you turn on the hot water tap, the incoming cold water is circulated through the activated heat exchanger. The heat exchanger heats the water to your preset temperature.

According to the U.S. department of energy, a home that uses 40 gallons or less of hot water daily can save as much as 34% when compared to the standard water heater. The savings are smaller on usage over 80 gallons per day…but still significant. The tankless water heater will save up to 14% over the standard water heater.

If you would like to get some more information about tankless water heaters, please give us a call.
